Melbourne is the trendiest place to live in Australia right now and was just rated the world’s highest rank city in the annual liveability survey by the Economist Magazine – whatever that means!  While Sydney was ‘the’ place to be around and after the 2000 Olympic Games – the shine wore off the city a little as a result of under investment in key infrastructure. Although as a general rule the local rivalries between cities are like most rivalries petty and over stated (except for Muhammad Ali and George Foreman which was the real deal). Melbourne was founded around 30 years after Sydney but by Federation in 1900 it was the home of the first parliament of Australia and was Australia’s largest and most prosperous city on the back of a gold rush in the latter part of the 19th century.
